John 21:1-14

“153: A Real Fish Story” reflects on John 21:1–14 as a powerful picture of the church’s calling and hope. After a fruitless night of fishing, the risen Jesus provides an overwhelming catch, reminding his disciples that their true mission is to reach people with the gospel. The moment echoes their original calling and shows that success in ministry does not come from effort alone, but from trusting and obeying Christ.

Honest failure becomes the starting point for renewal, as the disciples admit they have caught nothing and then respond in faith to Jesus’ command. Their experience reveals that the church is most faithful when it listens to Christ and depends on his power rather than its own strength.

The meal on the shore points beyond the present to the future Christ prepares for his people. It offers a glimpse of the eternal reward awaiting those who serve him, where labor gives way to rest and the joy of knowing him fully.
