“Come on out, Harvey!” explores John 11:1-44, contrasting our limited human-perspective view with the big, full God-perspective. Just as a humorous misunderstanding from The Honeymooners reveals how easily we misread situations, the story of Lazarus shows how grief, delay, and confusion can cloud our understanding of God’s work.
Even when Jesus delays, receives honest lament, and enters deeply into human sorrow, he is working for a greater glory. In declaring himself the resurrection and the life and calling Lazarus from the tomb, Jesus reveals a God who loves deeply, welcomes our cries, shares in our pain, and secures ultimate victory over death.
This sermon invites us to step beyond our narrow perspective and trust the bigger picture of God’s redeeming work in Christ, who brings life even out of death.
